Behind the scenes

Conserving and repairing documents

Preparing documents for scanning involves elaborate processes. Trained conservators inspect each document and undertake restoration if required.

LPI continues to research and develop new conservation techniques for the stabilisation and treatment of records.

Scanning

Records are scanned and information about the document - the metadata - is added.  Most of the record sets are scanned in colour to capture coloured ink details and shading.

Scanning large volumes is a specialty of Graphic Services which scan millions of images as part of our digitisation program eg the Real Property dealings scanning involves 30 million records and 100 million images. Graphic Services also capture Crown plans and other land records that date back to the commencement of European settlement.

These high quality images provide access to information contained in original documents and ensure preservation of the original documents as archives managed by State Records.
