Spatial data

Spatial data - mapping data transformed into digital form so that it can be used in computer systems - has become a vital tool for people who need information on land, the environment, transport, communications, utility services and demographics.  It is also used in everyday through tools like GPS and online driving directions.

Spatial data describes the shape and location of real world objects such as survey marks, natural resources, buildings, physical landscape and administrative factors such as land parcels, street addresses and local government areas.

Since 1990, LPI has collected and developed a rich array of spatial data related to NSW. Building on traditional maps and plans, along with our aerial imagery, LPI has built and maintained several fundamental geospatial databases, including:

  • The Digital Cadastral Database (DCDB). A “cadastre” is an official register of property showing boundaries. The DCDB is a comprehensive database of boundaries throughout NSW, including lots, suburbs and localities, electoral districts and other administrative boundaries, reserves and parks, road corridors, coastlines and river boundaries.
  • The Digital Topographic Database (DTDB). The DTDB contains both physical and cultural data, including land contours and hydrology, hospitals, schools and other places of interest, transport facilities and routes.

With the help of Geographical Information System (GIS) technology, many organisations in government and the private sector now use this data in combination with their own to plan and manage assets and operations. Individuals and small companies with GIS software can also benefit from our data.

Data can be provided on hard disk, through regular file updates provided over the Internet, and on a dynamic basis through connections between your computer system and ours.
